Difference between a broker and a regular agent?

A broker and a regular insurance agent both help individuals and businesses obtain insurance coverage, but their roles and affiliations differ. A regular (or captive) agent typically works for one insurance company and can only sell that company’s products. In contrast, an insurance broker is independent and represents multiple insurance companies, giving clients access to a wider range of policies and options. Brokers work on behalf of the client rather than a specific insurer, helping compare coverage, premiums, and benefits to find the best fit for the client’s needs.

Both insurance brokers and regular (or captive) agents assist clients in obtaining insurance, but the key difference lies in who they represent and the range of options they can offer. A regular agent works for a single insurance company and is limited to selling that company’s products. They are trained and authorized by their insurer to explain policies, assist with applications, and provide ongoing service for that company’s coverage. On the other hand, an insurance broker is independent and works on behalf of the client rather than any specific insurance company

How can an advocate help you?

Understanding the Role of Insurance Brokers

Insurance brokers are independent professionals who work on behalf of clients, not insurers. They help compare policies from multiple insurance companies, ensuring clients get coverage that best fits their needs and budget. Brokers provide expert advice, explain complex terms, and assist throughout the policy lifecycle to make insurance decisions easier and more informed.

What a Captive Agent Can Do for You

A captive or regular insurance agent works for a single insurance company and specializes in selling that company’s products. They can provide detailed knowledge of their insurer’s policies, guide you through applications, and offer ongoing support for claims and renewals. While their offerings are limited to one company, their expertise ensures clients fully understand the products available.

Broker vs. Agent – Choosing the Right Partner

Deciding between a broker and an agent depends on your needs. Brokers provide a wide range of options from multiple insurers and work directly for your best interest. Agents, however, offer deep knowledge of a single company’s policies and can streamline the purchasing process. Understanding these differences helps you choose the professional who best aligns with your coverage goals.
